| Short answer: This isn’t a flavour question, it’s a device question — and the two are not interchangeable. TEREA is for the IQOS ILUMA range, which heats by induction using a metal element built into the stick. HEETS is for the older IQOS devices that heat with a blade pushed into the stick. Put a HEETS in an ILUMA and nothing happens, because there’s no blade to heat it. Put a TEREA in an old blade device and you risk damaging both. The five-second check: look inside your holder. If you can see a blade, you need HEETS. If it’s smooth and empty, you need TEREA. |
The mistake we see most often
Someone comes in holding a pack they can’t use. Usually they’ve upgraded to an ILUMA, still had HEETS at home, and assumed a stick is a stick. Or they bought online, the listing was vague, and they picked whichever was cheaper.
It’s the single most common buying mistake in this category and it’s entirely avoidable, because the two systems aren’t similar-but-different. They’re built on opposite principles.
How the two systems actually work
HEETS: a blade goes into the stick
The older IQOS devices heat from a ceramic blade that sits inside the holder. You push the stick down onto it, the blade heats from the inside, and the tobacco around it warms up. That’s why a HEETS stick has a hollow end — it’s designed to be pierced.
It works, but the blade is the weak point. It collects residue, so the device needs regular cleaning, and it can snap if you twist a stick out carelessly. Anyone who used IQOS for a couple of years has probably broken one.
TEREA: the heating element is in the stick
ILUMA got rid of the blade entirely. Each TEREA stick has a metal element built into it, and the device heats that element by induction — no contact, nothing pushed into the tobacco.
That’s why TEREA sticks have a solid end, why the device barely needs cleaning, and why there’s nothing to snap. It also means the heating is more even, which matters for capsule flavours like Oasis Pearl where a clean release depends on consistent temperature.
TEREA vs HEETS: the actual differences
| TEREA | HEETS | |
|---|---|---|
| Works with | IQOS ILUMA range | Older IQOS 3 / DUO / Multi |
| How it heats | Induction — metal element inside the stick | Blade inserted into the stick |
| Visible blade in device | No | Yes |
| Cleaning needed | Minimal — nothing touches the tobacco | Regular, blade collects residue |
| Blade can snap | No blade to snap | Yes — common failure |
| Interchangeable? | No | No |
| Stick appearance | Solid end, no hole | Hollow end for the blade |
The row that surprises people is cleaning. If you’re coming from a blade device, the reduction in maintenance is the change you’ll notice first — more than any difference in taste.
Which one do you actually need?
| If your device is… | You need | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| IQOS ILUMA i One | TEREA | All-in-one, single piece |
| IQOS ILUMA i Standard | TEREA | Holder plus charger |
| IQOS ILUMA i Prime | TEREA | Same sticks as the rest of the range |
| IQOS ILUMA / ILUMA One (older) | TEREA | Induction too |
| IQOS 3 DUO | HEETS | Blade heating |
| IQOS 3 Multi | HEETS | Blade heating |
| Not sure | Look inside the holder | See a blade? HEETS. No blade? TEREA |
The last row is the check to remember. Open the holder and look inside. A blade sticking up means HEETS. A smooth, empty chamber means TEREA. It takes five seconds and it’s more reliable than trying to remember model names.
If you’re shopping for a device rather than sticks, the current range is ILUMA i One from AED 172, i Standard from AED 265, and i Prime from AED 350 — all three take the same TEREA sticks. Browse ILUMA devices.
Can you use HEETS in an ILUMA?
No. There’s no blade to heat the stick, so the device simply won’t produce anything. It isn’t a safety problem, it’s a physics problem — nothing happens.
The reverse is worse. A TEREA stick has a metal element inside it, and pushing a blade into it is not what either part was designed for. Don’t try it.
If you’ve bought the wrong ones, they’re not wasted — they’ll work perfectly in the right device. Keep them if you still own it, or pass them to someone who does.
Does TEREA taste different from HEETS?
Most people who switch say yes, and describe it as cleaner. That’s plausible given the heating method — nothing is physically inserted into the tobacco, and the temperature is more even across the stick.
But be careful with that claim, because it’s easy to overstate. You’re changing device, stick design and usually flavour name all at once, so isolating what changed is hard. What we’d say honestly is: expect a similar experience, slightly cleaner, with less maintenance. Don’t expect a transformation.
Flavour naming also shifts between the two systems, which adds to the confusion. If you’re trying to find the TEREA equivalent of a HEETS flavour you liked, our flavour comparison hub and the ranked flavour guide are the fastest way to land somewhere close.
If you’re switching to TEREA, start here
Came off regular cigarettes originally? Start with Bronze from AED 120 if you want strength, Sienna from AED 115 if you want something you can smoke all day. Full comparison.
Smoked menthol? Go to Turquoise from AED 119 or Blue for something softer. Menthol rankings.
Want to ease in? Silver is the safest first carton in the range.

Common questions
What is the difference between TEREA and HEETS?
The heating system. TEREA is made for IQOS ILUMA devices, which heat a metal element built into the stick by induction. HEETS is made for older IQOS devices that heat with a blade pushed into the stick. They are not interchangeable.
Can I use HEETS in an IQOS ILUMA?
No. ILUMA has no blade, so a HEETS stick simply will not heat. Nothing happens.
Can I use TEREA in an older IQOS?
No, and you should not try. TEREA sticks contain a metal heating element and are not designed to have a blade inserted into them.
How do I know whether I need TEREA or HEETS?
Look inside the holder. If you can see a blade, you need HEETS. If the chamber is smooth and empty, you have an ILUMA and you need TEREA.
Does TEREA taste better than HEETS?
Most people who switch describe it as cleaner, which is consistent with nothing being inserted into the tobacco and more even heating. It is a refinement rather than a transformation, and you are usually changing flavour at the same time, so treat strong claims either way with caution.
Which ILUMA devices take TEREA?
All of them — i One, i Standard and i Prime, plus the earlier ILUMA and ILUMA One. The sticks are identical across the range.
