Why Italy is the most misunderstood origin in Dubai
Every other origin on our shelf is easy to describe. Italy is not, and the reason is regulatory rather than commercial.
The European Union restricted characterising flavours in heated tobacco, which reshaped what EU retail shelves are allowed to carry. Menthol and flavoured heated-tobacco variants came off European shop shelves as a result. So when a UAE buyer sees Italian TEREA menthol on sale in Dubai, the reasonable reaction is confusion — and a fair number of people assume it must be counterfeit.
It is not. Our Italian stock is export spec — Italian-produced, made for markets outside the EU. Production for export and production for domestic EU retail are not the same thing, and a factory routinely produces stock destined for markets with different rules. That is precisely why the menthols and capsules exist on our shelf when they do not sit on a shelf in Milan.
We are telling you this plainly because most sellers cannot. If a shop cannot explain which spec they are selling you, ask more questions — not because Italian menthol is impossible, but because a seller who does not understand their own stock is not one who will spot a fake either. Around AED 108 to 111 per carton over the cheapest equivalent, and roughly AED 68 over the Swiss version of the same flavour. That is a large gap and it deserves an honest explanation rather than a marketing one.
The blend specification for a given flavour is built to one standard across production markets. There is no superior Italian leaf. What the premium reflects is scarcity — Italian stock reaches Dubai in limited drops rather than steady supply — plus the price European packaging commands in this market.
If that sounds like we are talking you out of it, we are being straight rather than discouraging. Plenty of people buy Italian knowingly and are happy with it. But if you came here assuming AED 228 buys better tobacco than AED 120, you should know that it does not, and we would rather tell you now than after the carton. Who should buy TEREA Italy
You want European-spec packs specifically. Not just any European pack — Italian ones. If you smoked TEREA in Italy, or you want Italian-language packaging rather than the multilingual Swiss version, this is the only origin that gives you that.
You want menthol in a European pack. This is the real reason to buy Italian, and it is the part almost nobody in the UAE market talks about. Because EU retail no longer carries flavoured heated tobacco, a European-packaged menthol is genuinely hard to find — and Italy is where it exists. Turquoise Menthol and Purple Wave in Italian packaging have no equivalent at any price from another European origin.
You want European capsules. Even more so. Oasis Pearl Menthol and Sun Pearl Menthol from Italian production have no Swiss equivalent — Switzerland’s six flavours are tobacco and menthol only, with no capsules at all. Italian stock is limited — plan around it
Italy arrives in limited drops rather than steady supply. When a shipment sells through there is no reliable date for the next one, and the capsule variants tend to go first because they are the part of the range with no European alternative.
Two pieces of practical advice. Buy more than one carton when you find the flavour you want, because we cannot promise a restock date. And tell us what you are after — when Italian stock lands we would rather call the people waiting for it. Because Italian stock sits at the top of the price ladder, it carries a counterfeit incentive second only to Japan. Apply the same checks: a tight outer seal with clean corner folds and a tear strip that comes away in one piece; even-toned inner foil with a crisp fold line; a sharp batch code that is not identical across every pack in the carton; and a stick with an internal heating element and no blade slot.
